Julián Aguirre

Julián Aguirre was born in Buenos Aires in 1868. In 1882 he moved with his family to Madrid, where he studied piano, harmony and counterpoint in that city’s conservatory. After a brief period during which he received advanced training in Paris he returned to Argentina in 1890 to teach piano and to perform throughout that country. After settling in Buenos Aires he played an important role in the musical life of that city by teaching harmony in the conservatory and participating in the creation of several musical organizations. Influenced by late 19th century Spanish musical nationalism, he set out to identify nationalistic tendencies in Argentina and convert them into music. He also became known as a music critic for "El Hogar." Along with many compositions for the piano, he also composed works for solo instruments as well as the symphonic suite, De mi país. He died in Buenos Aires in 1924.
