Alejandro García Caturla
Alejandro García Caturla (1906-40) is one of Cuba’s most important composers of the early twentieth century. After early musical studies in his hometown of Remedios, García Caturla entered the university in Havana, where in addition to studying law, he also studied harmony, counterpoint and fugue. In 1928 he went to France where he briefly studied with Nadia Boulanger, who found him to be a gifted student. Returning to Remedios he became a lawyer but continued to compose music that combined classical and native themes with contemporary musical trends. He was particularly fascinated by the mixtures of European and African rhythms and used these to great effect in many of his compositions. Tragically, García Caturla was murdered by a defendant just days before sentencing.
