Domingo Santa Cruz

Domingo Santa Cruz is one of Chile's most influential composers. Born in 1899, he served as dean of the performing arts faculty of the University of Chile from 1923 until 1953. During his tenure, many reforms were instituted and many organizations were created, such as the Revista Musical Chilena. His earliest compositions date from 1918. Although neo classically conceived, his music reveals Romantic tendencies; one of his most characteristic pieces is a suite for string orchestra, "Cinco piezas breves," that was composed during the mid 1930s. Some of his music was published by another of the organizations that he helped to found, the Musical Extension Institute.
