Set includes score and five parts.
The second place winner in the CILASiM 2020 International Composition Competition, Savannah is inspired in the landscapes, social issues and culture of the northern Caribbean region of Colombia, known as the “Savannah of Córdoba and Sucre.” This land is famous for its beauty, the joyfulness of its people and its cattle industry. Unfortunately, there are also sinister elements of extensive drug dealing and its concomitant violence within a largely inequitable socioeconomic surrounding. In fact, during the 1990s the violence had become so commonplace that even the sight of corpses regularly floating down the San Jorge river failed to register in the consciousnesses of the inhabitants of that area. Nevertheless, and in spite of it all, the people of this area never stop smiling, preferring instead to enjoy life with a positive or even festive attitude. Throughout its four movements, then, this work attempts to express the moments that are typical of this region, while at same time emphasizing its oxymoronic character.
In the second movement, the performers must produce whispered phrases. The following sound files are intended to aid in the emulation of the particular accent which is commonly spoken along the Caribbean coastal areas of Columbia.
Each phrase will be demonstrated in exactly the same manner. After a narrated introduction, “Typical Spanish pronunciation,” you will hear the phrase spoken in a neutral manner by a native speaker. The narrator will then return to introduce a second speaker, “Coastal Spanish pronunciation,” who will say the phrase two times, in a normal tone and then in a whisper.

Many thanks to Domingo Ledezma and Manuel Andrango for narrating the audio!
In the fourth movement, the performers must vocalize an expression known as “guapirreo,” which is a high-pitched scream used to express celebration or happiness. The following sound file consists of three examples.
