“The Stick and the Mask” is based on a short novel by Venezuelan writer and philosopher José Manuel Briceño Guerrero. It tells a typical “Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde” kind of story in which a murder with multiple personality disorder commits his crimes during a traditional holiday in the western Venezuelan state of Lara.
The atmosphere of mystery and terror is obtained by using the low register of the instrument which has a well-known threatening and dramatic quality. Irregular rhythms and the occasional use of extended technique complement the descriptive effect of the piece.
